What is SAD?

Do you have a tendency to become depressed around the same season every year? If so, it may be due to seasonal affective disorder. Many people experience the effects of SAD during the winter months, though it can occur during any season.

It is believed that the main cause of SAD is a diminished amount of exposure to sunlight, though research continues to bring further developments.

SAD afflicts women and younger people more, as well as those with a family history of depression, and who live far away (north or south) from the equator.

Signs & symptoms

There are several indicators that SAD is impacting you which may include:

  • A mood of sadness that lasts several weeks
  • Feeling agitated and irritable, crying more easily
  • Loss of interest in activities, hobbies, and interests
  • Having delusions, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts
  • Work performance and relationships become damaged

Diagnosis

  • After discussing symptoms with your healthcare provider, further evaluations such as a physical exam, psychological assessment and lab blood work are completed. When other causes are ruled out, you may receive confirmation it is SAD.

Treatment

It is going to be alright, and you are not alone! There are many ways to help yourself through SAD:

  • Spend time in nature and with loved ones
  • Maintain healthy eating and exercise routines
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy, to assist with developing effective coping strategies
