Impermanence

By Eli Noonan

“While you take time to sit with your emotions, you can begin asking yourself about positive steps to accept the changes around you”

As September ends and October begins, even the most committed summer enthusiasts must start to acknowledge the truth: autumn has begun. The nights are now quite chilly, and even in the daytime it is frequently cloudy, with a chill in the air. With these changes in weather, I often experience a strange sort of sadness. The change from summer to fall feels like the end of something, and this seems to cause a strange feeling of wistful sorrow. As small and unserious as moments and emotions like this are, I find them to be useful tools to reevaluate my mental attitudes and expectations towards change. Nothing stays the same forever, and life changes happen all the time. We can choose to fight change or be angry or sorrowful about what used to be, or we can accept it as much as possible and allow our expectations to adjust.

You, yourself, have probably experienced some changes this year, whether that is something pretty regular like changing grades or classmates, or something a bit bigger like changing cities. Whatever the case, it is normal to feel sad and miss the way things used to be. It is okay to feel anxious about new experiences. And while you should take time to sit with your emotions and feel however you feel, you can also begin asking yourself about some positive steps to take to accept the changes around you. You can start to make small adjustments to the situations and circumstances in your life so that they suit your needs and goals a bit better. Maybe that means enrolling in some different activities after school to help you make friends in your new class. Or maybe that means taking time to walk around your new neighbourhood to help you feel a bit more at home. I hope you find some time this month to think about the changes in your life, and to discover ways of adjusting and accepting them.
