Fall into Learning:
Mindful Practices for a
Successful Back-to
School Season
By Nmachi Isaac Agbakwuru
"Embrace this season as a time to realign, focus, and prepare for a fulfilling and accomplished end of the year."
Crisp chilly air, the crackling of fallen auburn leaves, and a warm, cozy palette of burnt oranges and muted golden yellows. Fall has always been my favorite season, and I know it’s beloved by many. The fall weather aesthetic gives us something to look forward to during a time that can often be stressful for those of us still in the thick of our academic careers. Amidst the stress of school, it’s easy to overlook how critical it is to prioritize our mental well-being. As we transition into the new school year, I’ve been trying to stay mindful of practices that support both mental health and academic success.
1) Set Goals
Fall, despite its perception as a time of endings, is a powerful season of renewal. Just as trees shed their leaves, fall reminds us that transitions are a natural part of growth. The new academic year, fresh routines, and even changes in the weather offer us opportunities to reset and refocus, the ideal time to assess where you are and where you’d like to be by year’s end. With just a few months left, it’s a great moment to reflect on the goals you’ve set, celebrate your progress, and refine your plans. Whether it’s academic goals, personal growth, or career aspirations, setting intentions during fall can help you finish the year strong. Break your larger goals into smaller, actionable steps, and create a realistic timeline to keep yourself on track. Personally I like making a vision and moodboard for any list of resolutions I have. Embrace this season as a time to realign, focus, and prepare for a fulfilling and accomplished end of the year. So what are some good goals to set for the season? Keep reading for great suggestions!
2) Get enough sleep / Fix your sleep schedule
This is one that students especially struggle with. It can be tempting to pull all-nighters to keep up with the fast pace of the semester, but consistent lack of sleep will eventually take its toll on both your physical, mental health, which actually negatively impacts your academics. So, this fall, prioritize getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night to improve your cognitive function, concentration, and overall mood. Your brain will thank you when it comes time to focus on assignments and exams. Not getting enough sleep is also associated with long-term risks, including an increased likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Prioritizing rest now will benefit both your present and future well-being (Budson, 2021).
3) Stay Organized / Create Routines / Take Breaks
Structure is key when managing the demands of a busy school schedule. Burnout is real. Remember that productivity comes from balance. Short, regular breaks help recharge your brain and improve focus in the long run. Don’t feel guilty for taking them. If you want to get enough sleep, keep up with your goals and stay on top of assignments and extracurriculars while also leaving space for relaxation and self-care. Setting aside time for both work and rest is very important. Likewise an organized space often leads to an organized mind. Whether it’s keeping a planner, setting digital reminders, or making to-do lists and calendars, find a system that helps you stay on track. I personally do all of the above to help meet my goals and avoid getting overwhelmed.
